Of Taking Stock And Letting Life Take Your Breath Away

The clear waters of Boracay's shores on a serene morning.
Life isn’t measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Soul searching is something that most people are apt to do come Holy Week or Easter season. It's something that a lot of people feel like they should be doing once a year. Since in the Philippines this is the most solemn time of the year, plus, it's a nationwide holiday for this largely Catholic country, most Filipinos find these solemn holidays the best time of the year to take stock of their lives and reflect on where they are so far.

I, however propose a different thing altogether. How about take stock of your life on a monthly basis? That way, you can evaluate where your growth is on a more regular basis and make the right adjustments as you see fit.

While I am miserable at being consistent on this, I still would like to keep trying to have these self-improvement rituals in place. For one, these help me see my progress and get encouraged as I see positive changes, as well as help me see areas where I may need to grow further.

One thing that helps me keep track of these stages of growth is keeping a daily journal where I record my day's milestones. While I've been remiss in those days when the flurry of life was just overwhelming, whenever I get a chance to sit down and rehash the major events of the days that have gone by, I take the opportunity to record these events. That way, I will recall all those major events that have defined and redefined me.

Growth is something that we all have to seek. Stagnating is not an option. Taking stock and thinking about where you are headed is something that could be the key to your transcendence.

As the Bible says, "Man does not live by bread alone." On that note, let me say that life is far more than a treadmill. It is an adventure to savor, with a mission to fulfill. Don't be content with merely surviving. Choose to thrive. Choose to really LIVE.
